Morning Silence

"The quieter you become, the more you can hear."

This morning as the alarm sounded off at 9am, it was just a reminder of the dread that comes with having to actually get out of bed in the mornings. For me, I believe I would rather endure ANY other type of torture.
After hitting the snooze button twice, I could not delay the enviable any longer. I had to rise, but I refused to shine at this moment of the day! Frost didn't get a chance to start the van to let it warm up. This just impacted my misery.
The 3 mile drive to the highway was cold...REALLY cold. It takes that long for our heat to really kick in. I couldn't decide if I want the warm air blowing on my hands, because the steering wheel was freezing my hands, or on my feet where my jammie bottoms & slippers were just not working to keep my ankles warm.
When I walk in the door back at home, all I want to do is nestle under my nice warm blanket which has been awaiting my return. I am not made for cold weather, nor am I made for mornings! I generate enough bravery to bolt across the cold kitchen floor to get some coffee started. It was short lived though. As soon as I hit the ON button on the coffee pot, I made a mad dash to my bed.
As I lay there, snuggled beneath two of my most favorite blankets, trying my very best to ward off the deep chill that was developing inside of me, I notice how alluring the morning silence really is. It fills my ears with a sort of ringing sound that is also a type of white noise. It is comforting, and it can really allow your thoughts to shine through all the noise which is usually blocking the way!
Silence isn't empty, it is full of answers.
Thankfully I had a notebook nearby to capture all the random thoughts that surfaced.
This is what meditation can look like. Laying in bed, eyes closed, notebook sitting next to you with a pen...and you periodically jotting down thoughts, ideas, & inspirations that come to you. Just allow your mind to flow from one thought to the next. Don't try to control the direction that it goes. Go with the flow. See what comes about!
Within the morning silence you can find the answers to questions you didn't know you should be asking. Solutions to problems you would have never found in the chaos of a busy, bustling day. Hopes & dreams that can get lost within all the noise of life.
I have found my silence in the morning, but you can find YOURS anytime during the day! If it comes later once children are all laying down for a nap, or once everyone else is in bed for the night. Maybe it is while you are sitting in your car waiting for someone to get done with dance or karate class. Or even during a nice bubble bath while someone is keeping the kids occupied.
It will look different from person to person because we are all beautifully different. Some may light candles or incense. Others may have their morning coffee, or afternoon tea to enjoy during this time. It would not be "breaking the rules" to even play some soothing or favorite music during this time. We would all define "silence" in our own unique ways, too.
Do you have your own way of finding YOUR silence in your day??
